From a humble outlet in Cavite in 2014 to the opening of its 1,000th store on 11 November 2020, Alfamart has gone a long way in the past 6 years. Mini Me Insights paid a visit to one of the first few Alfamart outlets back in Trece Martires City in 2014. The success of Alfamart demonstrates the ability of Alfamart to effectively positioned itself in the minimarket space, which is relatively absent in the Philippines back then. Alfamart describes itself as a “super minimart”.

Alfamart still has a lot of growth opportunities through geographical expansion and converting consumers from traditional trade to modern trade. COVID-19 will also likely to have shifted some value-seekers into minimarket.

Apart from minimarket, would dollar store as a model works in the Philippines like it has worked to great success in Malaysia? Dollar store is a format that sells products at an affordable price. In Malaysia, Eco-Shop priced its products at RM 2.10 and its products cover both food and non-food items. Perhaps contenders can make an impact through this format.
