Carrefour Taiwan and Taiwan’s China Airlines have recently teamed up to launch a new range of airline inspired gourmet frozen ready meals. Sold under the Carrefour Sensation label, the new private label frozen ready meals made by China Pacific Catering Services (華膳空廚公司) offer consumers with 6 types of gourmet meals mirroring the quality found on First Class services.
This is the first time China Pacific Catering Services has launched frozen ready meals. The pivot towards retail is necessary for airlines and their meal catering divisions as income has been negatively impacted by subdued air travel.
The Carrefour Sensation meals include Coconut Green Curry Rice (南洋椰香綠咖哩雞飯), Coconut Red Curry Chicken, Hungary Red Wine Stewed Beef (匈牙利紅酒燉牛肉飯), India Style Tandoori Chicken (印度坦突里雞飯) and Stewed Beef Noodle Soup (紅燒三寶牛肉麵) priced at TWD 119 and TWD 199. The meals are free from additives.
Earlier in October 2020, Evergreen Sky Catering Corporation (長榮空廚), the in-flight catering arm of EVA Air, partnered with FamilyMart to introduce Business Class premium beef noodles. The beef comes from New Zealand.
Even Thai Airways is found selling street food patong-go, or deep-friend dough, to bring in much needed revenue to the struggling airline.
In India, the country’s largest flight caterer, Tata Group TajSats has ventured into the home-delivery of meals. The meals are sold under the new brand, Anuka, a multi-cuisine virtual restaurant available on the Qmin (Taj Hotels’ food delivery) App in Mumbai and Delhi.
We expect to see more airline collaboration in the food arena. It can be a positive development especially for private label as airline in-flight meal providers can help to improve the range and quality of private label meals.
