“To enter the store, you’ll need to download the Cheers SG mobile app, then add your Visa card details as your payment mode, and scan the on-screen unique QR code at the gantry after the entrance, or you can even use facial recognition which you can register in the app. Once you’ve picked your purchases, they’ll be automatically added to your virtual shopping cart, and charged to your Visa card when you exit the store.”

Cheers introduced its first unmanned and cashless store concept at Nanyang Polytechnic in 2017 followed by an additional two more unmanned stores at the National University of Singapore. The store today will be its fourth operational unmanned store.

The interesting question is would the unmanned concept work now? So far, past efforts in other markets have failed. There is a change in consumer attitude following the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic has raised consumer awareness about hygiene and interest in the zero checkout technology. Moreover, scanning before entering a shop has become a norm. Perhaps this novel concept will have a second chance?
