Yeo’s has expanded its ready-to-eat protein portfolio in Malaysia with two new canned tuna variants, Teriyaki and Chilli Spicy, including what it claims is the country’s first teriyaki-flavoured canned tuna.
In the US, the launch comes at a time when canned seafood is experiencing renewed interest among younger consumers. Social media trends like “tinned fish date night,” premium repositioning by brands such as Fishwife and Scout, and rising demand for convenient, protein‑rich foods have helped transform the category’s image from a humble pantry staple into a lifestyle product. This shift reflects how Gen Z and Millennials are redefining canned seafood as a gourmet, sustainable, and Instagram‑worthy choice, fueling growth and opening new opportunities for innovation.
In Malaysia, canned seafood brands have largely focused on functional benefits such as omega-3 content and protein. However, there remains an opportunity to build stronger emotional connections by drawing on flavour exploration, consumption occasions and lifestyle positioning, similar to how tinned seafood brands in Western markets are elevating the category.
The tuna launch follows Yeo’s recent introduction of Boneless Chicken Rendang and Boneless Chicken Curry in microwave-friendly stand-up pouches. Reflecting growing consumer interest in protein-rich foods, the packaging prominently highlights protein content, with 33g of protein in the curry variant and 24g in the rendang. Together, these launches signal Yeo’s efforts to modernise traditional meal formats through greater convenience, flavour innovation and high-protein positioning.
