From two-person operation in Johor to a family business spanning more than five decades in Klang, JJ Suppliers and Joo Seng Sein Kee show how long-term collaboration with HEINEKEN Malaysia can help local businesses build capabilities, create jobs and grow with the communities they serve.
Behind every bottle of beer is a much wider chain of businesses and people. It begins at the brewery, where ingredients are turned into finished products with the support of suppliers providing packaging and other materials. From there, products move through logistics networks, warehouses and distributor sales teams before reaching restaurants, retailers and hospitality businesses — and eventually consumers.
Each part of that chain supports the next. An Economic Impact Assessment report by the Confederation of Malaysian Brewers Berhad (CMBB) found that the brewing industry contributed an average of RM7.1 billion annually to Malaysia’s economy between 2022 and 2023 and supported around 52,400 jobs. Each direct job supported an estimated 43 additional jobs across the broader economy.
That economic activity reaches across manufacturing, logistics, retail and hospitality, linking breweries like HEINEKEN Malaysia with local businesses and communities. Distributors are a crucial part of that network, connecting brands with customers and consumers while building their own workforces, capabilities and relationships over time. JJ Suppliers in Johor and Joo Seng Sein Kee (JSSK) in the Klang Valley show what that looks like on the ground.
JJ Suppliers: Building a Business from the Ground Up
JJ Suppliers began in Skudai, Johor, in 2011 with just two employees. An early turning point came when HEINEKEN Malaysia gave the young company the opportunity to become a wholesaler.
Before its formal appointment, JJ Suppliers spent around a year in training, building the knowledge needed to take on the role. From there, the relationship grew with the business. JJ Suppliers says the partnership helped its team draw on HEINEKEN Malaysia’s industry experience and grow its business with the company’s established brands. Both sides also worked together to address challenges as JJ Suppliers expanded.

The change since those early years is significant. What started with two employees has grown into a business with around 100 staff and several warehouses totalling approximately 27,000 sq ft. Its customer base has also expanded across Greater Johor Bahru, where JJ Suppliers serves restaurants, pubs and retailers. The way it works has evolved too. JJ Suppliers now uses more technology and data to better understand its customers, sales and products, while continuing to stay close to the businesses it serves.
“For me, the most memorable thing is the journey. We started very small, HEINEKEN Malaysia gave us an opportunity, and we grew together over the years. When I look back at where JJ started and where we are today, I am very thankful for the partnership,” said Felix Lee, Managing Director for JJ Suppliers.
Joo Seng Sein Kee: Five Decades of Evolution
Founded in 1972 by Mr Tee Seng as a single-lot sundry shop in Port Klang, JSSK has spent more than five decades growing alongside the communities it serves. What began as a modest family business has evolved into a beverage distributor operating from a 22,500sq ft warehouse and office, with a footprint that now extends across Pandamaran, Klang, Pulau Ketam, Jenjarom, Banting and Rimbayu.
Its relationship with HEINEKEN Malaysia began in 1982. More than 40 years later, the partnership has evolved alongside JSSK’s business as the company strengthens its operations to serve customers and respond to changing purchasing behaviours.
Digitalisation has been one part of that shift. Eazle, HEINEKEN Malaysia’s business-to-business digital platform, brings ordering, trade marketing and customer service into a single interface, making it easier for outlets to place orders with JSSK and access promotions. JSSK also uses business intelligence tools such as Power BI to manage inventory, track sales and access real-time insights. Since 2024, JSSK has also supported the fulfilment of HEINEKEN Malaysia’s online orders across major e-commerce platforms.

“Our partnership with HEINEKEN Malaysia goes back more than 40 years, and over that time it has grown alongside our business. The collaboration has helped us strengthen our operations, adopt new ways of working and reach customers more effectively. Looking ahead, we hope to continue building on that partnership together while preparing the next generation to take JSSK forward,” said Valerie Tee, General Manager at JSSK.
JSSK now employs 35 full-time staff, continues to invest in employee development and workplace safety, and supports local community initiatives. The next generation is also being progressively introduced to the business, bringing new ideas around innovation and digital transformation.

Shared Value Beyond Distribution
Together, JJ Suppliers and JSSK directly employ around 135 people, but their impact extends beyond their own businesses. Through the restaurants, pubs, retailers and other customers they serve, their growth is connected to a much wider network of jobs and livelihoods across the value chain.
“For HEINEKEN Malaysia, strong distributor partnerships are essential to serving customers effectively while creating shared value across the wider business ecosystem. As our partners evolve, so does the way we work together, through training, new capabilities and better ways of reaching customers. When they grow, the benefits can extend to the people and communities around them,” said Josephine Tang, National Sales Manager, HEINEKEN Malaysia.
For distributors, however, continuing to invest also depends on the conditions in which they operate. One concern is the price gap between duty-paid beer and illicit beer products. CMBB has highlighted that further excise increases can widen this gap and place additional pressure on legitimate businesses.
“We appreciate the Government’s freeze of the last excise increase on beer. With legitimate businesses like ours already competing against much cheaper illicit products, keeping the duty unchanged helps avoid adding further cost pressures. It also gives us greater certainty to plan ahead, invest in our people and operations, and continue supporting the restaurants and retailers we work with,” said Felix Lee.
The impact extends well beyond distributors. A stable legitimate beer market helps support the wider network of businesses across the brewing industry’s value chain, from logistics partners and distributors to retailers, restaurants and hospitality operators. When these businesses have the confidence to invest and plan for the long term, they can continue creating jobs, supporting local economies and contributing to the communities around them.
