Inspired by the True Story of a Chinese Man Who Raised Three Malay Boys

27 August 2025, Kuala Lumpur – Abah Saya Uncle Mike, a heart-wrenching film that promises to stir deep emotions, explores the meaning of family that goes beyond blood ties. Unlike typical family films, Abah Saya Uncle Mike presents the dynamics of a family shaped by differences in race, religion, and culture—making it a narrative rarely explored in Malaysian cinema. At its heart, it is a story of a family not bound by blood, but by trust, acceptance, and unconditional love.

Produced by Astro Shaw together with 7up and Mirinda, the film is inspired by the true story of a Chinese man, Michael Tong Wai Siong, fondly known as Uncle Mike, who raised three Malay children. The film will open in cinemas nationwide on August 28, 2025.

Abah Saya Uncle Mike delves into the emotional journey of three orphaned siblings left to fend for themselves after the tragic loss of their parents. The eldest, Rafei, escapes an abusive orphanage with his younger brothers, Rasyid and Rahman, in search of a better life. When the siblings are separated, Rafei is temporarily taken in by a Chinese man named Uncle Mike. In their efforts to reunite, the siblings and Uncle Mike confront the true essence of family, ultimately realising that family is defined by more than just blood.

Each scene is brought to life by a talented ensemble cast, including Andy Teh, Idan Aedan, Nor Merah, Umar Shakur, Pauline Tan, Chew Kin Wah, Mandy Chong, April Chan, Han Zalini, Nadiya Nisaa, Sobri Anuar, Songbill, Taqim Zaki, Shahkimin, Chris MJ, and Bidin Al Zaifa.

Known for his action-packed roles, Andy Teh showcases a different side of his talent with a heartfelt and emotional performance. His chemistry with young co-stars Idan Aedan, Nor Merah, and Umar Shakur adds depth and emotional weight to the story.

Abah Saya Uncle Mike marks the feature film directorial debut of Ezrie Gazali, who previously directed reality TV shows, commercials, and the popular drama series Kiblat ke Syurga. Produced by Le Mediator Studios, the screenplay is penned by Muzzamer Rahman, Nik Naemah, Ezrie Gazali, Kyle Goonting, Yoke Yeng, Catalina Mae Hubbard, and Samuel Sin.

According to Raja Jastina Raja Arshad, Executive Producer of Abah Saya Uncle Mike and Head of Astro Shaw, “Uncle Mike’s story reflects the true values of a multicultural Malaysian society. This heartfelt tale deserves to be shared with all, as it inspires unity and reinforces the importance of humanity and compassion. We brought this heartfelt true story to life in Abah Saya Uncle Mike, a truly Malaysian film that presents an honest narrative of love, sacrifice, and relationships that transcend cultural and religious boundaries. Understanding that the local market is largely driven by action and horror genres, we made a bold decision to explore the emotional realism of the drama genre and challenge audiences’ expectations of Malaysian cinema.”

“The film also marks another milestone in the strategic synergy between the creative and commercial sectors. Following a series of successful collaborations between Astro Shaw and Etika, we are proud to welcome 7up and Mirinda as associate partners in this venture. This bold move signifies a meaningful step forward in shaping the future direction of the Malaysian film industry.”

Amy Gan, Vice President of Marketing at Etika Sdn. Bhd., said: “Abah Saya, Uncle Mike is more than just a film, it is a heartfelt reminder that love and acceptance can overcome any difference, creating bonds that embody the Malaysian spirit of unity and family. As we approach Malaysia Day, the story reflects the beauty of our diversity and the strength we find when we stand together, values that Etika and our brands have always stood for.”

Amy continues, “For over 50 years Mirinda has added colour to festive gatherings while 7UP has lifted everyday moments with joy and togetherness, making them natural champions of this community story. To carry that spirit into the premiere, we created the limited edition ‘Menangis itu OK, 7UP kan ada!’ kit which includes tissues for tears, a pillow for comfort, sunglasses to hide emotion, and of course a can of 7UP to taste and feel the uplifting spirit of Bangkit, with a locally designed bag by homegrown artist Izzati Suza to celebrate community and creativity.”

For the first time ever, Astro Shaw is also introducing the #UncleMikeEdits fan interaction initiative. Following the release of the official teaser trailer on Astro Shaw’s social media platforms, fans are invited to submit their own creative versions of teaser trailers and posters. Winning entries will receive exciting prizes and be credited in the film.

In addition, audiences can take part in the #LuahanHati digital contest for a chance to win the limited-edition ‘7up Bangkit Semula’ kit together with movie tickets (details at Gempak). The campaign has already seen positive traction on social media.

Programmatic Trailer Celebrates Unique Festive Storytelling with 7up & Mirinda

Earlier this year, Astro Shaw and Etika, through 7up, launched the first programmatic trailer in conjunction with Chinese New Year 2025, featuring the cast of Abah Saya Uncle Mike in a celebratory story that reflected Malaysia’s multicultural spirit. Published across Astro Shaw and Etika’s digital platforms, the trailer introduced audiences to the film’s themes of family, compassion, and unity in time for the festive season.

This was followed by Mirinda’s Raya programmatic trailer, Balik Rayaaahhh, which brought Uncle Mike and his three adopted sons together in a kampung-style Raya celebration, highlighting the joy of reunion and the message that nothing unites differences more beautifully than love.

The official theme song of the film, titled “Lelah”, is performed by Mark Adam.
