Nattome and UCSI University Release the 1st Local Clinical Study On Fermented SoyBean To Treat Gut Health

(third from left) Indra, Jon & Dr. Tan at Nattome The Gut Show

Presents New Range of Stomach Food Range Amidst GERD Rise In The Country

Kuala Lumpur, July 16, 2024 – Gut health expert Nattome has staged its The Gut Show showcase which headlines experts’ sharing as well as the release of the first clinical study in Malaysia on the efficacy of fermented soybean for gut health – a research-backed collaborative effort with UCSI University.

Modern-day living has led to accelerated pace of life, stress, poor lifestyle habits and imbalance eating habits – which could easily trigger gastrointestinal issues. The World Health Organisation showed that 1 in 3 persons is experiencing a digestive disorder at any one time. Media reports indicated that gut diseases, overall, rank the 4th as the principal cause of private hospitalization in Malaysia’s hospitals in 2021.

In view of 70% of our immune system is in the gut, one cannot overlook the importance of a healthy gut.  Common gut-related issues include bloating, indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome and  gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), with 1.03 billion (GERD) patients worldwide and an increase of 78% over the past 30 years. A survey posted by BMC Gastroenterology in 2023 indicated that the estimated number of individuals suffering from GERD is 13.98% of the adult population worldwide. In Malaysia, GERD is rising and currently affects an estimated 9.7% of the country’s population.

(third from left) Mr. Foo Fung Jiun, Head of Procurement CARiNG Pharmacy Group, Indra, Jon & Dr. Tan at Nattome The Gut Show

At today’s media event, Head in Medicine and Health Sciences Assistant Professor Ts Dr Tan Chung Keat explained that GERD is becoming more rampant and is commonly treated by medication or in chronic cases, requires surgery.

Prof Dr Tan offers insights into the role of natural functional foods in treating GERD naturally. “Functional foods are not just about nutrition; they are about natural foods or supplementation that optimizes health and helps prevent disease. One good functional food is fermented soybean (Glycine max) which is a primary plant-based protein source in East Asian countries. Soy bean is a staple food and crucial crop of many Asian countries with domestic and international demands causing an increase in acreage of the crop in countries in Asia (28 – 40% in the last 15 years), America and Europe. Fermented soybean offers more health benefits than its unfermented counterpart, recognised for its therapeutic effects and has been proven to possess anti-diabetic, anti-oxidants, anti-cancer  and anti- inflammatory properties,” explained Prof Dr Tan.

Nattome Stomach Food

Nattome recently collaborated with UCSI University to conduct an independent research which led to the unveiling of the first clinical study ever in Malaysia on the efficacy of fermented soybean in treating gut health problems, especially for GERD relief today. Fermented soy bean is the key ingredient present in Nattome’s food-based solutions, used in the research.

The study spanned 12 weeks with 110 participants with complaints of heartburn, acid reflux, regurgitation and non-cardiac chest pain. The results revealed significant improvements in GERD symptoms, quality of life and marked reduction in inflammatory levels among users of Nattome.  Overall, the study group showed a 47.6% reduction in heartburn symptoms, 40.9% reduction in dyspepsia (indigestion) symptoms, 62.9% reduction in regurgitation symptoms, between 19.8% to 43.5% for various inflammation markers and 13.3% improvement overall in quality of life in Reflux & Dyspepsia (QOLRAD)

QOLRAD is a disease specific assessment tool which is a tell-tale of the psychometric conditions of the participants.  The clinical study showed that the study group on Nattome supplements showed improvement of 16%.7% in vitality, 15.1% in eat/drink problems, 13.3% emotional distress, 12.3% sleep disturbance and 10.8% physical and social functioning.

Nattome supplementation effectively improves GERD symptoms, reduce inflammation levels, and improve users’ quality of life. Moreover, 96% of the participants perceived improvements on their gut issues towards the end of the study.

Mr Jon Lai, Founder and CEO of Nattome, shared his own journey of suffering from serious gut health issues during his earlier working years.  Not a fan of non-natural solutions nor medication, he was looking for more au naturale treatments which led him to incept Nattome and innovate a scientifically-backed range of food-based products to help Malaysians alleviate and prevent stomach-related issues, to optimise their health and live life to the fullest.

“Nattome’s key products Stomach Food and R&R (Repair and Relief) supplementation, crafted from entirely natural food ingredients and mainly  fermented soybeans a patented component derived from Japanese fermentation technology. Nattome poses these six major benefits including optimizing gastric pH value, strengthening gastric lining and immune system, soothing heartburn, improving indigestion, relieving bloating and promoting gut health, said Jon.

Ms Indra Balaratnam, a certified dietitian, said, “A healthy gut ensures proper digestion of  the foods and drinks you consume everyday. When the foods are digested well, your body’s cells are able to absorb the nutrients from the foods so that it becomes the foundation in your overall good health, strengthening your immunity and reducing your risk for chronic diseases. Daily good habits for maintaining a healthy gut are eating a balanced diet of a variety of wholegrains, lean proteins, vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds to support the good functioning of the digestive organs; regular exercise, keeping stress levels low and getting sufficient sleep.

One’s eating and lifestyle habits are an important component in managing GERD and minimizing the discomforts. To do this, practise mindful eating to avoid food and drinks that trigger heart burn and acid reflux; eating small, frequent meals; include probiotic rich foods daily, eat no later than 3 to 4 hours before bedtime and avoid doing vigorous activity soon after a meal are strategies that effectively help to tame GERD discomforts,” advised Indra.

Nattome also kicked off a key partnership with CARiNG Pharmacy Group. This collaboration aims to enhance the accessibility of Nattome’s products through CARiNG Pharmacy’s extensive network of 250 retail outlets. With this, Nattome products would be available in a total of 500 outlets to date,” Jon elaborated.

7Up and Major Cineplex tom yum popcorn is a perfect fit

Major Cineplex Group has partnered with Suntory PepsiCo Beverage (Thailand) Co., Ltd. to pair up its new tom yum popcorn with the refreshing and tangy taste of 7Up Lemon Soda. Such pairing offers consumers with double the tangy and spicy taste.

Carbonated soft drinks can play a greater role in pairing spicy food with its refreshing taste. Globally, there is a rising consumer interest in spicy food, especially among young consumers in the West. The current trend is “swicy” (aka sweet heat), which is the latest buzz of the town and one that the beverage category has embraced eg, Starbucks Spicy Lemonade Refreshers featuring the heat of Starbucks Spicy Chili Powder Blend.

However, a drink cannot become extremely spicy, as evidenced by the lack of repeat purchases of the now-discontinued Mamee Ghost Pepper Cola from Malaysia.

Don’t get hacked, Malaysian companies should continue to prioritize cybersecurity

Malaysia’s booming digital economy creates a high demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals. The specific skillsets needed for modern cybersecurity threats might not be readily available in the current talent pool.

15 July 2024

The Digital Minister informed the Parliament in the last seating on the need for Malaysia to maintain a high level of expertise in cybersecurity to face future threats. The Communications Minister also echoed that Malaysia faces a significant deficit of cybersecurity expert, with only slightly over 15,000 currently active within the industry.

Kaspersky business solutions blocked 2.5 million local threats targeting businesses in Malaysia during the period of January to December in 2023. Statistics on local infections of user computers are an important indicator of the overall cyberthreat landscape. They include objects that penetrated the target computer through infecting files or removeable media, or initially made their way onto the computer in non-open form.

The security solution also blocked 26.8 million online threats targeting businesses in 2023. Malaysia continues to see a significant number of attacks, averaging more than thousands a day. The attackers are also constantly developing new methods, such as financial phishing scams, ransomware attacks, and exploitation of unpatched vulnerabilities.

“It is known that Malaysia is short of cybersecurity experts, with the recommended number of cybersecurity personnel of 27,000 by 2025. Our own survey also found that 48% of companies require more than six months to find a qualified cybersecurity professional. Businesses in Malaysia are in dire need to beef up their cybersecurity posture against the escalating threats online and offline,” says Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager of Southeast Asia at Kaspersky.

Kaspersky thinks there are signs suggesting the corporates will need to continue to invest and invest more in cybersecurity. The cybersecurity company shared a study done globally that median cybersecurity budget was USD3.75 million for enterprises and USD375,000 for SMBs annually.

“The government has shared that many companies in Malaysia did not see the importance of investing in cybersecurity. The lack of focus and care for strong security protection render companies very susceptible to cyber threats, more so for those with hybrid and remote work arrangements. This can lead to costly financial and reputational damages in the event of a major attack,” adds Yeo.

Kaspersky’s study finds that four in ten companies globally plan to outsource their cybersecurity, with the shortage of qualified cybersecurity staff as one of the primary reasons.

Kaspersky recommends the following for businesses to fight cyberattacks even with limited cybersecurity staff:

  • Upgrade cybersecurity solutionsand use centralized and automated platforms such as Kaspersky Next, a new flagship of B2B product line combining strong endpoint protection with the transparency and speed of EDR (Endpoint Detection and Response) and the visibility and powerful tools of XDR (Extended Detection and Response).
  • As many AI solutions are built on containers, it’s important to secure the infrastructure they are integrated in with cybersecurity products – such asKaspersky Container Security – that allows companies to detect security issues at every stage of the app lifecycle, from development to operation.
  • Train and upskill workforce.Building a cyber-aware culture requires a comprehensive strategy that empowers employees to gain knowledge and put it into practice. While InfoSec professionals can advance their skills with Kaspersky Expert training, and defend their companies against attacks, IT support teams and general workforce can also benefit from specialized training courses, such as those provided in the Kaspersky Automated Security Awareness Platform.
  • Adopt secure-by-design principles.By integrating cybersecurity into each stage of the software development lifecycle, secure-by-design software and hardware become resilient against cyberattacks, contributing to the overall security of digital systems. Cyber Immune solutions based on KasperskyOS, for instance, allow companies to minimize the threat surface and significantly decrease the ability of cybercriminals to perform a successful attack.
  • Meet regulationsto avoid legal problems or reputational damage, by ensuring your cybersecurity practice meets changing standards and legal requirements.

Your Beer Keeps the Forest Standing

A chilled conservation initiative by Cardamom Tented Camp

Cardamom Tented Camp ecolodge in Cambodia has launched its own conservation beer with the tagline, “Your Beer Keeps the Forest Standing”.

Profits from the Cardamom Mountains Steam beer, now available at the ecolodge, help fund the conservation work of 16 forest rangers who protect 18,000 hectares (180km2) of surrounding lowland evergreen forest in the Botum Sakor national park, Cambodia’s largest.

Since opening in 2017, the nine-unit award-winning camp has operated with the slogan “Your Stay Keeps the Forest Standing”.

“Now it’s the turn of beer drinkers to take one for the team and do their bit for conservation,” says camp manager, Allan Michaud.

Mr Michaud chose the hybrid Steam beer after tasting sessions with Mr Yuki Aotani, founder of Flowers microbrewery in Phnom Penh.

The slightly hoppy beer – already a hit with camp guests – is 5.2% strong and sells in 330ml bottles for US$4.50 at the lodge’s small riverside restaurant.

Keeping it local is important for Michaud.

“With local Khmer dishes also on our menu, we make it easy for our guests to enjoy food and drink that reflect the best of Cambodia. Almost everything we do at the camp helps conservation of the forest and supports local suppliers,” he says.

Cardamom Tented Camp also sells locally made Ibis beer – profits from which are used to protect the rare Ibis bird in Cambodia – and craft beers made by the Stonehead brewery, also in Phnom Penh.

Recycled bottles

The Steam beers sold at the camp are in previously used 330ml bottles given to the brewery by the camp.

Each month a percentage of income from beer sales and guest stays help forest rangers reduce illegal poaching, land grabs and riverbank sand dredging. This summer the camp added two new Wildlife Alliance forest rangers bringing the total to 16 now on patrol.

With illegal hunting down by a factor of about 90% over the last seven years or so, sightings of rare wildlife such as Asian elephants, silver langurs, smooth-coated otters and leopard cats have increased in the lowland forest around Cardamom Tented Camp.

Further details about Cardamom Tented Camp activities, package options, booking availability and the lodge’s sustainability work are available at cardamomtentedcamp.com.

About Cardamom Tented Camp

Cardamom Tented Camp is an ecolodge located in the foothills of the Cardamom Mountains in Cambodia. Since opening in late 2017, it has operated with the slogan, “Your Stay Keeps the Forest Standing.” The nine-unit tented camp, with restaurant pavilion, staff dormitory, ecotourism equipment and boat pier, uses solar power to run lodge amenities. The camp has its own waste water filtration process. There is no road access. The camp is accessible only by river boat – or forest hike.

The lodge aims to minimise the human footprint on the natural world and serve as a role model in promoting sustainable ecotourism practices within both the national park and Cambodia as a whole. Located on an 18,000-hectare (180 sq km) concession, the lodge and its surroundings are home to pristine lowland and coastal habitats linking wildlife corridors to the Cardamom Mountains. Eco-friendly trekking and kayaking packages are available for adventure enthusiasts who are keen to be a part of real conservation work.

Cardamom Tented Camp is a three-way initiative between Minor Group, YAANA Ventures and Wildlife Alliance to ensure the land and its biodiversity does not fall into the hands of loggers, poachers and sand dredging operations.
