Coway Continues its CSR Efforts Through the Happy Water Project to Uplift Underprivileged Communities

The Coway Management team, together with the Global Peace Foundation (GPF), visited the indigenous Jakun community of Kampung Batu 15 to kick-start the Happy Water Project 2.0

Borewell installation marks the first step for Kampung Batu 15, with solar-powered water pump system and eco-washrooms targeted for completion in 2026

KUALA LUMPUR, 9 DECEMBER 2025 – Coway, the Best Life Solution Company, continues to uphold its commitment to enhancing community wellbeing through its Happy Water Project, a long-running Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative focused on delivering clean, safe and sustainable water solutions to underprivileged communities nationwide.

In partnership with the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Malaysia, this year’s effort centres on the indigenous Jakun community of Kampung Batu 15, Nenasi, Pekan, Pahang – a remote village of 16 families who have long endured significant challenges in accessing clean water and basic sanitation facilities.

For years, Kampung Batu 15 relied on self-dug wells and ponds as its primary water sources, leaving residents exposed to contamination from plantation runoff and animal waste. Water shortages frequently occur during prolonged droughts, while monsoon floods often isolate the community from nearby towns, restricting their ability to obtain clean water from alternative sources. With no formal sanitation facilities in place, villagers also face higher risks of waterborne diseases while women and children shoulder the burden of daily water collection, spending long hours each day to secure enough water for essential needs.

Through the Happy Water Project, Coway has completed the initial phase of support with the installation of a professionally drilled borewell, providing the village with access to a more reliable source of underground water that is better protected against environmental contaminants. Building on this foundation, Coway is now progressing towards installing a solar-powered water pump system that will draw water from the borewell and channel it into an elevated tank for smoother distribution to homes. Powered entirely by solar energy, the system will operate independently of the electricity grid, making it highly suited for remote communities prone to power disruptions.

Complementing these efforts, Coway has also embarked on constructing eight eco-washroom facilities. Built using recycled materials and durable Ecopeal roofing, these washrooms will provide villagers a safe, private and hygienic space for daily use, particularly for women and children, who are most affected by the lack of proper sanitation. Construction is being carried out in phases and is targeted for full completion in 2026.

Ryan Jung, Head of Marketing and Product Division of Coway Malaysia (left), together with Brian Kim, Managing Director of Coway Malaysia (middle), and Dr Teh, CEO of the Global Peace Foundation (right), officially demonstrated the first borewell system via a water demonstration for the Kampung Batu 15 community.

Ryan Jung, Head of Marketing and Product Division of Coway Malaysia shared, “At Coway, we believe that clean water should never be a privilege reserved for some, as it is a basic right that every human being deserves. When we listen to the stories of families in Kampung Batu 15, we see their resilience, but also the realities they have faced for far too long. Happy Water Project is our way of standing with them and offering solutions that protect their health and support a stronger, more hopeful future. This is a cause we hold close to our hearts, and we will continue championing it until clean, safe water reaches every community that needs it.”

To further support community wellbeing, Coway carried out a Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WaSH) training programme to strengthen hygiene practices within the community. The session included hands-on demonstrations on proper handwashing and toothbrushing techniques for both adults and children, helping families understand the importance of consistent hygiene in preventing illnesses. Each household also received a WaSH kit containing essential daily items to encourage continued practice at home and reinforce healthier routines in their everyday lives.

Coway’s long-standing partnership with the Global Peace Foundation (GPF) Malaysia remains central to the success of the Happy Water Project. GPF’s strong engagement with Orang Asli communities enables both organisations to implement solutions that are not only effective, but also sustainable and beneficial for the community over the long term.

Since its inception in 2017, the Happy Water Project has benefited more than 1,000 families nationwide, particularly among Orang Asli communities across Pahang, Perak, and Negeri Sembilan. This initiative continues to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, reaffirming Coway’s commitment to building a healthier, more sustainable Malaysia.

Alongside this initiative, Coway is also extending its support to families affected by the recent monsoon season. As flash floods continue to affect various states in Malaysia, Coway is taking proactive steps to assist more than 2,000 households with essential daily necessities and hygiene items to restore their livelihoods as they recover from the aftermath of the floods. This further demonstrates Coway’s long-standing commitment to the nation’s well being by strengthening living conditions for families in need. Through timely emergency response and continued community-focused efforts, Coway continues to stand with Malaysians in moments of immediate need and in their journey toward a better quality of life.

KUALA LUMPUR, 8 December 2025 – The Malaysia premiere of “UPanda Cinema” and the launch of the China-Themed Program Showcase Season were successfully held today in Kuala Lumpur. The initiative is jointly guided by the State Council Information Office of China, the National Radio and Television Administration of China, and the Ministry of Communications of Malaysia, and co-organised by the China Intercontinental Communication Center (CICC), Astro Malaysia, and Mango Media Sdn. Bhd.

“The Malay-language ‘UPanda Time’ China Program Showcase Season will offer Malaysian audiences a culturally rich and engaging viewing experience,” said Li Zhuang, Deputy Director-General, External Promotion Bureau, The State Council Information Office of China. He expressed hope that traditional Chinese culture would help strengthen people-to-people ties and enable both countries to better tell the story of China–Malaysia cultural exchange and mutual learning. He added that deeper audiovisual cooperation, including co-production, content exchange and talent development would further broaden channels for mutual understanding. He also highlighted that youth exchanges can serve as an important driving force in solidifying these bonds and opening new pathways for the next ‘Golden 50 Years’ of China–Malaysia relations.

Zheng Xuefang, Minister of Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Malaysia, attended the ceremony and remarked, “China and Malaysia share centuries of friendship, with culture serving as an enduring bridge between our peoples. The launch of ‘UPanda Cinema’ marks a meaningful step in implementing our leaders’ consensus and deepening cooperation in film, television and culture. We believe the diverse programs showcased will help Malaysian audiences better understand China’s history, heritage and development, further strengthening mutual learning and people-to-people ties as we work toward the next ‘Golden 50 Years’ of China–Malaysia friendship.”

Representing the Malaysian government, YB Teo Nie Ching, Deputy Minister of Communications of Malaysia, highlighted that Malaysia and China share longstanding cultural ties that continue to strengthen mutual understanding between our peoples. “UPanda Cinema’ offers Malaysian audiences wider access to Chinese content and opens new opportunities for collaboration in film and television. Our screen industry has attracted over RM1 billion in investments, supported more than 160 projects, created 16,300 jobs, and generated an economic multiplier effect of RM3.5 billion. We look forward to deepening cooperation and advancing a new chapter of bilateral friendship,” said YB Teo Nie Ching.

At the ceremony, representatives from the External Promotion Bureau of the State Council Information Office of China, the Embassy of China in Malaysia, the Ministry of Communications Malaysia, Tourism Malaysia, Astro Malaysia, and CICC jointly officiated the launch of the China-Themed Program Showcase Season.

The showcase season will be broadcast on Astro’s television channels through the Chinese New Year in 2026, featuring a curated selection of outstanding Chinese programs. More than 100 hours of China-themed content will be presented, including

  • Drama Series: Flourished Peony, Romance in the Alley
  • Documentaries: Master Class, Rediscovering Home Truths
  • Animation: MooBoo Cops
  • And more programs curated to present a rich cultural viewing experience.

In addition, CICC signed two major film and television cultural cooperation projects with Mango Media Sdn. Bhd. and Juxta Films:

  • China–Malaysia Themed Short Drama Co-creation Program,
  • China–Malaysia Film and Television Cultural Exchange and Cooperation Agreement

These agreements aim to advance bilateral collaboration in micro-drama co-creation, filming-based partnerships, and industry development. A new China–Malaysia co-produced light-variety program, “Melody Bridge”, was also announced.

The ceremony also featured a performance by Malaysian dancers, incorporating the traditional intangible-heritage craft “Wau Bulan” (Moon Kite) to form the silhouette of a giant panda, symbolising the enduring friendship between Malaysia and China.

First launched in 2021, “UPanda Cinema” (“UPanda Time”) is an international audiovisual platform that collaborates with major local media outlets across more than 20 countries, including France, Germany, Italy, India, South Africa and Central Asian regions, reaching an audience of over 130 million worldwide.
