The company donates RM400,000 to support basic food supplies for over 3600
families and individuals
KUALA LUMPUR, 9 September 2021 – The COVID-19 pandemic has evolved into an unprecedented and multi-faceted crisis affecting not only public health, but also socio-economic well-being. Lockdown measures and disruptions in Malaysia’s key markets have severely impacted the local economy. Many have lost their jobs and livelihoods as a result, and are currently experiencing hardship and poverty.
In light of this, Coway Malaysia has donated a total of RM400,000 to MERCY Malaysia’s Food Aid Programme, which seeks to deliver basic food supplies to vulnerable communities that have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and the constant lockdowns.
This corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative is part of the company’s commitment to stand alongside Malaysians in the fight against the challenges brought on by the pandemic. As The Best Life Solution Company, Coway Malaysia aims to provide solutions that actively change lives. By collaborating with trusted organisations such as MERCY Malaysia, the company seeks to directly impact communities in need.
The contribution will fund 3,600 food packs, benefiting vulnerable groups across the country, including urban and rural B40 families; families of B40 frontliners; the disabled; refugee populations; as well as shelter homes. Each food pack comprises essential food items including rice, cooking oil, sardines, malt drinks, and flour.
Kyle Choi Ki Ryong, Managing Director of Coway Malaysia said, “We have a duty to help those in need as we believe any action, no matter how small, can start the ripple effect towards creating a better world. On this note, we are grateful to partner with MERCY Malaysia to help provide basic food supplies to those in need. This collaboration is also in line with our current ‘We Stand As One’ campaign, which solidifies our support for the public as we fight through this current challenge. We will continue to help communities in need, connect the disconnected, and stand alongside all people in Malaysia – we will not stop until we overcome this challenge together.”
Since August, Coway Malaysia has worked hand-in-hand with MERCY Malaysia to deliver some 3,113 food packs to individuals and families in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Pahang, Johor, Malacca, Sabah, Perak, and Penang. The remaining food packs will be distributed over the month of September, and will include those in other states like Terengganu and Sarawak.
“Food is a basic need for every human being and it is devastating to see that the pandemic has harmed the poor and vulnerable communities living in extreme poverty. Thus, MERCY Malaysia has been responding to the COVID-19 pandemic since March 2020 to deliver assistance to various sectors and section of society. One of our plan’s components is on delivery of food aid. We truly appreciate the support by Coway Malaysia through this initiative and we do believe that we need to join hands and support each other to weather this challenge together,” said Mohammad Said Alhudzari Ibrahim, General Manager, Programme Operations Division, MERCY Malaysia.
