Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Malaysia is set to host a grand celebration of the Songkran Festival, bringing the vibrant traditions of Thailand’s most cherished festival to the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Organized by the Royal Thai Embassy in Malaysia and EQ Solutions, this vibrant celebration of Songkran will be held in Kuala Lumpur from April 10–20, 2025, at the Forecourt, 1 Utama Shopping Centre. Recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the Songkran Festival offers both Malaysians and visitors a rare opportunity to immerse themselves in the rich cultural traditions and joyful festivities of Thailand’s beloved New Year celebration.

Songkran, traditionally celebrated as the Thai New Year, symbolizes renewal, gratitude, and community. Known for its water-splashing activities, it represents the cleansing of misfortunes and the welcoming of a fresh start. This year’s event will feature a harmonious blend of traditional Thai cultural performances, religious ceremonies, and the fun-filled water festivities that have made Songkran a globally beloved celebration.

Festival Highlights Include:

  1. UNESCO-Recognized Cultural Performances: Attendees will be treated to traditional Thai dance, music, and art forms that highlight the cultural significance of Songkran, showcasing the deep-rooted traditions that earned Songkran its UNESCO recognition.
  2. Ram Blessing Ceremony: An auspicious ritual, the Ram Blessing, will bestow blessings of prosperity, health, and happiness upon the Ambassador of Thailand to Malaysia, VIPs, invited guests, and participants.
  3. Water-Splashing Fun: The iconic water-splashing activities will take center stage, inviting everyone to join in the playful and symbolic act of cleansing and renewal. Designated water play zones will ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all ages, with a Bomba fire truck dedicated to this activity.
  4. Thai Culinary Delights: Experience a curated selection of authentic Thai cuisine from SELECT-awarded restaurants, including PJ Kao Man Gai, M Dining, and other top eateries from Bangkok. Festival-goers can savor the rich flavors of Thailand’s world-renowned dishes, prepared by Thai national vendors.
  5. Cultural Exhibitions and Workshops: Interactive exhibits and workshops will provide insights into Thai traditions, such as Thai perfume-making, traditional Thai massage demonstrations, and the art of Thai fruit carving.
  6. Exciting Nightly Entertainment: Enjoy performances by Thai singers, DJs, and a special appearance by Yes Sirday Band from Bangkok, Thailand. Known for their dynamic performances and emotional pop-rock sound, Yes Sirday has built a strong fanbase since their debut in 2013 under Genie Records.

The event was officiated by Her Excellency Ms. Lada Phumas, Ambassador of Thailand to Malaysia, who commented on the cultural experience and celebration, stating: “Today’s festival is an opportunity for our friends in Malaysia to experience firsthand the magic of Songkran—from Len Nam (water-splashing festivities) to vibrant Thai traditions such as Rod Nam Dam Hua and Ram Wong Rerng Songkran.

This festival also serves as a venue for greater trade and investment cooperation between Thailand and Malaysia. I encourage you to explore over 40 stalls offering authentic Thai culinary dishes and high-quality products. While we always welcome Malaysian tourists to experience Songkran in Thailand, I am thrilled to bring the spirit of Songkran to Kuala Lumpur, so each and every one of you can enjoy our beautiful Thai cultures right here.”

Jo Vin Chuah, Marketing Director of EQ Solutions, commented: “We are proud to, once again, bring the Songkran Festival to Malaysia, sharing the beauty and joy of this UNESCO-recognized celebration with our Malaysian friends. This festival is not only a time for fun and festivity but also an opportunity to unite the Thai community in Malaysia, creating a sense of home away from home and deepening the cultural ties between Malaysia and Thailand.  We invite everyone to join us in experiencing the spirit of Songkran – a celebration of renewal, unity, and cultural pride.”
