Kuala Lumpur, 4 December 2024: Mead Johnson Nutrition Malaysia proudly concluded the Enfagrow A+ Brain Speedometer Challenge Grand Finale today at Petrosains KLCC, bringing together 27 young finalists  aged from 1 -6 years to showcase their cognitive abilities.

The event underscored the early five years as a “golden window” for brain development, during which almost 90% of a child’s brain forms[i] with over one million neural connections made every second[ii]. This critical period fosters next-level intelligence—traits that are Advanced, Attentive, and Adaptable—and emphasizes the importance of fast brain processing speed for learning, problem-solving, and adaptability.

The role of MFGM in Enfagrow A+ was highlighted for its support of rapid processing speed and cognitive resilience. Additionally, the COMEL developmental milestone toolkit, first introduced at the Future-Ready A+ Kids Expo earlier this year, enables parents and healthcare professionals to track developmental milestones actively, ensuring children gain the foundational skills for lifelong learning. At the Expo, participants also competed in the Enfagrow A+ Brain Speedometer Challenge, where 27 finalists were selected based on their real-time cognitive performance.

Supporting these abilities through proper nutrition, particularly with MFGM and DHA in Enfagrow A+ MindPro, plays a key role in nurturing future-ready children equipped to tackle tomorrow’s challenges.

FedEx: Sowing Seeds of Hope for Underprivileged Urban Communities

FedEx Malaysia, in collaboration with TrEES, addresses food insecurity through a community vegetable garden initiative, now in its second year, providing fresh vegetables to the underprivileged urban communities.

In Malaysia, an estimated 4.5%[1] of people living in urban areas face poor living conditions. The high cost of living poses significant challenges, making access to basic necessities and food essential for their survival. Food insecurity in these communities often leads to poor nutrition, increased health issues and limited opportunities for growth and development.

FedEx and TrEES: A Collaborative Effort to Address Food Insecurity

Recognizing this challenge, FedEx Malaysia, in collaboration with non-profit organization Treat Every Environment Special (TrEES), has stepped up to address food insecurity through its community vegetable garden initiative. Now in its second year, the program delivers fresh vegetables to underserved communities, enhancing nutrition and reducing food costs.

The initiative kicked off with the establishment of a vegetable garden managed by TrEES and supported by nearly 100 FedEx volunteers. The garden produces enough vegetables to supply approximately 700 meals every month to welfare homes and vulnerable groups. Welfare homes benefiting from the initiative, such as Pusat Jagaan Ros Biru in Klang, reported a 20% reduction in grocery expenses, enabling them to redirect resources toward other critical needs.

“At FedEx, we are driven by our purpose to connect people and possibilities, creating opportunities for meaningful change,” said Tien Long Woon, managing director of FedEx Malaysia. “Through our collaboration with TrEES, we are helping to address food insecurity and promoting sustainability, while also amplifying our community engagement efforts. By working together, we can uplift underserved communities and contribute to a healthier, more sustainable future.”

“Collaborations like the one with FedEx are pivotal in scaling the impact of our initiatives,” said Leela Panikkar, director of TrEES. “With their support, we have expanded our reach, delivering fresh produce to improve the health and livelihood of local communities. This collaboration addresses immediate needs while emphasizing the importance of collective action in building stronger, more sustainable communities.”

Positive Impact on Communities

The TrEES community vegetable garden has had a positive and lasting impact on both individuals and the broader community. By providing fresh vegetables year-round, the initiative reduces food insecurity and improves nutrition. Beneficiaries have shared how this support has helped them through challenging times, providing a sense of hope and stability.

“The fresh vegetables have been a blessing for us,” shared a recipient from Pusat Jagaan Ros Biru. “They’ve made our meals healthier and more varied, which is important for the well-being of our residents. We’re incredibly grateful for this support as it has made a meaningful difference in our lives.”

Other recipients from Pusat Jagaan Ros Biru have also shared heartfelt stories about how the initiative has brightened their lives. “Every time TrEES sends us the vegetables, we feel so happy knowing we’ll enjoy delicious, nutritious meals,” said one recipient. Another recipient added, “The fresh vegetables have eased a lot of our worries. They’ve made us feel more confident about having enough food.”

Beyond addressing food insecurity, the program promotes healthier eating habits and strengthens social bonds by bringing people together with a shared purpose. The volunteers, comprised of FedEx employees, play a vital role in maintaining the garden and, in the process, gain valuable skills in sustainable farming and healthy eating – skills they can carry forward into their own homes and communities.

Empowering Communities and Fostering Sustainability

To ensure the sustainability of the initiative beyond FedEx involvement, TrEES plans to transform the garden into a dedicated training center for sustainable agriculture. This hub will provide participants with practical skills in gardening and resource management while generating income through the sale of seedlings and compost. The revenue will support the garden’s operational costs and inspire other communities to establish their own vegetable gardens, promoting self-sufficiency and sustainable food practices.

Vision for a Sustainable Future

While TrEES drives the long-term vision of building self-sustaining ecosystems through its community vegetable garden initiative, the collaboration with FedEx amplifies the program’s reach and impact. Together, they address immediate food insecurity while fostering resilience and promoting the future well-being of Malaysia’s underserved population.

“As TrEES continues to expand this initiative, FedEx Malaysia is proud to have supported efforts that create a lasting impact by providing sustainable solutions and empowering communities,” added Tien Long Woon.

Commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility

This collaboration exemplifies the transformative power of corporate social responsibility. By uniting resources and expertise, FedEx and TrEES are fostering meaningful change, paving the way for a more sustainable and resilient future for generations to come.

Lights, Genie, Action! Arabian Nights Musical Delights Raises Funds for Charity

Kuala Lumpur, 4 December 2024 – Sri KDU Kota Damansara’s annual school production, Arabian Nights: The Aladdin Musical Production brought together students, families and the local community for an evening filled with storytelling and purpose. This year’s musical not only celebrated the talent and dedication of 383 students but also served as a charity event, raising funds to benefit local homes in need.

Set against the enchanting backdrops of Agrabah, the musical followed the endearing story of Aladdin, a spirited young man whose courage, wit and kindness win the heart of Princess Jasmine and foil the schemes of the conniving sorceress Jafrrina. With the Genie’s magic lending bursts of humour and sparkle, the cast and crew brought the story to life in vivid detail, weaving together themes of friendship, courage and self-discovery that resonated deeply with audiences of all ages.

The cast and crew, comprising 383 students aged 7 to 12, took on an impressive array of roles, from actors, dancers and choir members to behind-the-scenes roles such as stage crew, props managers and food and beverage team members. The musical also featured the 37-member Sri KDU String Orchestra, the school’s award-winning ensemble, recently honored at an international competition in Hong Kong.

“What makes this production special is how it brings together different aspects of learning: creativity, responsibility and compassion – raising the bar in an all-local musical production of international standards,” shared Puan Shamsiah Anverdeen, Principal of Sri KDU National Primary School. “Each student has fully embraced their role, whether on stage or behind the scenes, and it is their dedication that truly brings the story to life – all while supporting a cause close to the community’s heart. They have indeed made this story their own!”

As part of the school’s commitment to charitable outreach, Arabian Nights raised RM38,505 through ticket sales. Adding on to the contributions previously raised during the Merdeka Carnival, the schools contributed a total of approximately RM77,000 to support Pusat Jagaan Titian Kaseh and Rumah HOPE, providing essential resources and assistance and underscoring the school’s mission to cultivate a sense of social responsibility among its students, by supporting a meaningful cause.

“We are incredibly grateful for the support from the community, parents and staff who have made this event a success. The student’s joy and excitement were visible in every performance and to channel this energy into a charitable cause truly amplifies the value of this experience for everyone involved,” added Shamsiah.

The musical featured two shows, showcasing the students’ incredible skills and reinforcing the school’s commitment to giving back. The students’ hard work was evident, as they spent months rehearsing their lines, songs and dances.

Rayshen Venkatachalam, who played the Genie, shared how the experience had positively impacted him. “Performing on stage has been such an amazing experience for me. I have gained more self-confidence, while it also helped me overcome my stage fright. I never thought I could sing because I see myself as just merely a dancer, but I am glad I discovered a new skill! Balancing daily rehearsals with schoolwork and other responsibilities was challenging, but it taught me how to stay discipline and improve my time management.”

His mother, Madam Lavania Kumaraendran, expressed her appreciation for the teachers’ dedication and commitment. “The teachers have been amazing, always guiding the students to improve and work together as a team. They definitely go the extra mile to create an environment where the kids can grow, explore their creativity and perform to the best of their abilities.”
