Get Rid 99.97% of Indoor Pollutants and Breathe Clean Air with Samsung Smart Air Purifier

Most of us already know the benefits of keeping our homes clean and germ-free, but for the past 18 months, this has become more important than ever. From disinfecting surfaces, sanitizing your hands and possessions to keeping your home as clean as possible, there are probably a bunch of things you have done to make sure that your living space is safe for you and your loved ones.

While it’s easy to wipe physical surfaces clean, the air that we breathe is something that you can’t hold on to even if you intend on giving it a good scrub. Enter: air purifiers, the latest home trend in Malaysia and a must-have item for any household, as it can remove air contaminants such as bacteria, allergens, pollutants, and other germs you want to steer clear from. Moreover, as we spend most of our time indoors, our exposure to poor air quality can put us at risk, and this is where a smart and powerful air purifier can be a lifesaver.

With a sea of options available in the market, here are some consideration factors you should know before purchasing one for your home:

Indoor Air is More Polluted than the Outdoors

It may come as a surprise but several studies[1] conducted by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) indicated that indoor air pollution levels can be two to five times higher than outdoors’. Sources of indoor pollution include combustion emissions from stove fires, cigarettes, pesticides, and the pollution brought in from the outdoors. Therefore, the presence of an air purifier at home is crucial for filtering out pollutant particles. For example, the Samsung Smart Air Purifier, 60, can filter various pollutants thanks to its multi-layered filtration system. The pre-filter works to cast out large dust particles, followed by a carbon filter that eliminates harmful gases.

The High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter will purify up to 99.97% of dust, allergens, and bacteria, measuring up to 0.3μm. This helps users who have respiratory problems or allergies to breathe better indoors. The Samsung Air Purifier is also equipped with a Laser PM Sensor to detect dust and particles less than 1.0 in size and various harmful gases. This helps to improve the quality of the air residents breathe.

Air purifiers can Eliminate Bad Odors and Harmful Gases

While air purifiers are used primarily to reduce indoor air pollution, it is also excellent for reducing odors and gases. For this purpose, pick an air purifier that is equipped with a filter that includes activated carbon. Samsung’s Multi-Layered Purification System not only extracts larger dust particles but comes with an Activated Carbon Deodorization Filter that removes harmful gases while the HEPA Filtration does its work. It has been proven to remove harmful gases such as toluene, xylene, benzene, ethylbenzene, styrene, and formaldehyde.

How Fast It Cleans Your Air Matters

The Clean Air Delivery Rate, or CADR, indicates the speed of air that is being cleaned within a particular room. A higher CADR rating means that the air purifier is able to clean air at a faster rate – an important point to factor in, ensuring that your machine can purify air much more quickly, reaching one corner to another in no time.

Thanks to its powerful fan that can quickly distribute clean air in multiple directions for wider coverage, the Samsung Smart Air Purifier with its 3 Way Air Flow system not only purifies air faster but also comes with a high CADR rating. For more effective cleaning, make sure the windows and doors are closed when you have an air purifier working.

Moreover, you can also move the air purifier to any location that needs more intensive purifying using its hidden moving wheels. Its portability allows you to clean the air in your living room during the day, and your bedroom at night. Since the wheels are neatly hidden underneath, it doesn’t spoil the overall design nor requires additional effort to move it around.

Air Purifiers Don’t Have to be Noisy

While fans on older models have been known to make a certain level of noise, especially when detecting and filtering harmful gases or substances, modern solutions have come a long way to be better equipped with smarter operating modes to minimize this issue.

Samsung Smart Air Purifier, for example, comes with Auto Mode and Sleep Mode features. In Auto Mode, the device will detect the level of air pollution in the room and automatically adjust the power and speed of the fan. Sleep Mode creates a softer and quieter airflow without any display of lighting. As a result, you can save effort and reduce energy use over time.

Stay Connected with Just a Few Clicks Away

Checking the air pollution level in your home has never been more easy thanks to the SmartThings mobile app[2]. Besides checking the air quality, you can now remotely control the Samsung Smart Air Purifier to turn it on or off, monitor the status of the filter and control other functions with a few clicks or by using your voice[3].

These days, owning air purifiers is necessary for indoor spaces given the many health and cleaning benefits it offers. What’s important to remember when buying is to find one that best suits your requirements so that you and your loved ones can breathe clean air in the comfort of your own home with no worry. Get your Samsung Smart Air Purifier, 60㎡ today at a promo RRP of RM1,599 (savings up to RM200) and a free filter (CFX-D100/GB) worth RM299 during this Samsung Merdeka ’Stay Strong Malaysia’ promo period.

HEINEKEN Malaysia Balanced More Than 100% of Water Used

Water Stewardship Target Achieved 10 Years Ahead of the Goal

11 August 2021 – Heineken Malaysia Berhad (HEINEKEN Malaysia) announced a significant sustainability milestone today, with an achievement of balancing more than 100% of water used in its products in 2020.

This marks significant progress made by the brewer in line with its Every Drop water strategy, achieving its 2030 target on Water Stewardship 10 years ahead of the goal. Every Drop is HEINEKEN’s strategy aimed at protecting the health of watersheds holistically, using a triangular approach that integrates Water Stewardship to fully balance the water used in its products, Water Efficiency to reduce water usage in production, and Water Circularity to ensure 100% of wastewater is treated whilst maximising opportunities to reuse and recycle water.

Speaking at the launch of the Company’s Water Balancing Report 2020, Roland Bala, Managing Director of HEINEKEN Malaysia, said, “Water is central to HEINEKEN and indeed a precious resource that is essential to all life. Our efforts in protecting our water resources over the years have enabled us to fully balance water used to brew our beers and ciders. We have an ambitious target to balance 1.5 litres for every 1 litre of water used in making our products. In 2020, through initiatives like river and peatland conservation, rainwater harvesting, reforestation, and other community initiatives, we achieved 267% versus our water balancing target. We are proud to reach this milestone 10 years ahead of our global 2030 commitment, and we will continue investing in science-based Water Stewardship initiatives for the long term to ensure the sustainability of our watershed.”

HEINEKEN Malaysia’s water balancing achievements are quantified in line with international industry-standard methodologies consistent with the Volumetric Water Benefit Accounting framework published by the World Resources Institute. The results are independently validated and verified by LimnoTech, a leading international environmental science and engineering firm based in the USA.

Renuka Indrarajah, Corporate Affairs and Legal Director of HEINEKEN Malaysia, said, “Water is not an infinite resource. Water scarcity, wastage and pollution are real issues that confront the world and as a responsible brewer, we want to do our part to protect our watersheds. Through our CSR arm SPARK Foundation, we partner with the Global Environment Centre (GEC) to execute Water Stewardship projects that enable us to protect our water source, whilst reducing demand on treated water through water conservation and alternative water systems for our communities. We are proud to give back more than what we take. We call upon other industries to start looking into sustainable water management practices. With collective action, we can be part of the solution to safeguard the sustainability of water supply for all.”

W.A.T.E.R Project, a partnership between SPARK Foundation and GEC, which started in 2007, has resulted in the roll-out of key Water Stewardship initiatives include:

  • Rehabilitation of Sungai Way river, an urban river in an urban industrial zone,
resulting in the improvement of the river’s water quality from Class IV – V (extremely
polluted, not suitable for living organisms) to Class III (suitable for living organisms)
  • Construction of a 305-metre clay dyke at the Raja Musa Forest Reserve that stores
up to 136.1 million litres of water annually, contributing to the long term sustainability
    of Sungai Selangor
  • Installation of over 1,000 water thimbles for more than 500 households in the
Klang Valley, which resulted in water savings of 19 litres per capita per day on average
  • Installation of 16 rainwater harvesting systems for communities in Selangor, thus
providing them with an alternative water source and reduce reliance on treated water
for non-potable usage as well as relieving pressure on our water resources
  • Reforestation of one hectare of degraded peatland at the Raja Musa Forest Reserve, which reduces the risk of peat fires and increases the peatland’s water table,
contributing to the health of Sungai Air Hitam within the Sungai Selangor watershed

Dr. Kalithasan Kailasam, Manager for the RIVER Care Programme of GEC, lauded HEINEKEN Malaysia on the significant milestone: “This is truly a commendable and encouraging development on the path of water stewardship. GEC together SPARK Foundation have embarked on three phases of W.A.T.E.R project since 2007. We started with education of communities and rehabilitation of rivers. Now we are looking into holistic water management which is water stewardship through smart partnerships. Water stewardship emphasises on the need focus on social equity, environmental sustainability, and economic growth.”

Kaspersky: Servers in Malaysia require better cyber defense

Global company monitors 150% rise of online infections launched locally in Q2 2021

09 August 2021

The continuing pandemic situation in Malaysia did not go unnoticed for cybercriminals. With the majority of Malaysians still working, studying, and doing daily activities virtually from their homes, Kaspersky has monitored an increase in terms of online threats in the country.

According to the fresh data from Kaspersky Security Network (KSN), the global cybersecurity company has detected 28,931,223 unique Internet-borne cyberthreats in the second quarter of 2021. This is 10 million more compared with the attacks blocked during the first three months of the year.

These infection attempts are often used by cybercriminals to penetrate systems. Such attacks usually take place when users visit infected websites.

File-less malware is the most dangerous, as its malicious code uses registry or Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) subscriptions for persistence, leaving no single object for static analysis on the disk.

  Q1 2021 Q2 2021
Web Threats 18,528,735 28,931,223
Local Threats 13,351,628 8,475,567
Threat Sources 204,313 512,014

Comparison Table: KSN data for web threats, local threats, and threat sources in Malaysia for Q1 and Q2 2021.

Because most companies are closed at the moment, the local threats data from KSN showed a downward trend from April to June. A 36.5% reduction from malware attempts through removable USB drives, CDs and DVDs and other ‘offline’ methods was observed between the first and the second quarter of the year.

However, in Q2 of 2021, cybercriminals utilized the servers located in Malaysia more to launch online threats. From just 204,313 attacks triggered by local servers from January to March, it ballooned to an alarming rate of 150% uptick with 512,014 incidents.

Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky

“Malaysia, with its digitalisation drive, is welcoming significant investments to build more data centers locally. This will be beneficial for the country’s people and economy, but it is important to also include cybersecurity in this development. It is clear that cybercriminals are aware of the country’s move to be the next digital hub in the region, hence now is the best time to equip servers and systems with holistic cyber defenses,” says Yeo Siang Tiong, General Manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky.

To help companies in Malaysia boost their virtual guards against attacks online, the global cybersecurity company has introduced its Kaspersky Managed Detection and Response (MDR). This solution aim to address multiple organizational setups and different priorities or strategies, and enable an instant IT security function for the companies, while allowing more mature IT security teams to focus on the most critical incidents.

The Kaspersky MDR is available to large enterprises as well as small and medium businesses.

“Detecting and responding to sophisticated attacks require specific expertise. Considering the additional budget needed for hiring additional experts plus the concerns on global shortage of cybersecurity talents, we are glad to offer an solution that can serve as an expert assistant to the already outstretched IT teams.” adds Yeo.

To protect your organization from APTs and other advanced attacks, Kaspersky recommends the following:

  • Dedicated services can help against high-profile threats. The Kaspersky Managed Detection and Response service can help identify and stop attacks in their early stages, before the at-tackers achieve their goals.
  • Use a dedicated set for effective endpoint protection, threat detection and response products to timely detect and remediate even new and evasive threats. Kaspersky Optimum Framework includes the essential set of endpoint protection empowered with EDR and MDR.
  • Provide your SOC team with access to the latest threat intelligence and regularly upskill them with professional training.
  • Provide your staff with basic cybersecurity hygiene training, as many targeted attacks start with phishing or other social engineering techniques.
