Ichi Ocha Thai Tea joins Thai tea wave

Ichi Ocha, the RTD tea brand from Indofood, has finally embraced Thai Tea with the launch of the new Ichi Ocha Thai Tea. Rival Ichitan from Thailand has been present in the RTD Thai milk tea segment in Indonesia since 2017 and has extended the product line up into Thai milk coffee and most recently into Thai milk green tea.

Ichi Ocha Thai Tea is said to be creamy.

Indomilk banana flavoured milk X Kopi Yor

The Indonesia coffee chain Kopi Yor has partnered with Indomilk for the launch of the new Banana Series featuring unique coffee-based drinks made from Indomilk UHT banana flavoured milk. The new Kopi Yor Banana Series comprise KopBan, which is a combination of espresso, ice cream, palm sugar and banana flavoured milk, CokBan, a mixture of banana flavoured milk, ice cream, syrup and chocolate, and BoSuBan (Brown Sugar Banana Boba), a combination of banana flavoured milk, ice cream, boba pearls and palm sugar.

The collaboration allows Indofood to tap into the current es kopi susu (iced milk coffee) trend and create a buzz around its Indomilk UHT banana flavoured milk. It also strengthens the company’s engagement with young consumers who are the core consumer base for its banana milk.

Kopi Yor, which currently has around 100 outlets, plans to bring this number to 200 by the end of 2020, said chief executive officer PT Otewe Maju Bersama, Tjoek Widharyoko.

AirAsia makes popular in-flight items available through GrabFood

AirAsia Thailand said it is making available 5 of its most talked about in-flight offerings Boba Milk Tea, Boba Thai Milk Tea, Boba Pink Milk Tea, After You Nom Yen Bun and After You Bread with Salted Egg Custard and Dark Chocolate Custard through GrabFood from 3 March 2020 onwards, according to the press release. Many of these items are longer available for in-flight purchase.

AirAsia also revealed it was able to achieve monthly sales of up to 50,000 glasses of boba milk tea, thanks to the unique flavor and chewy diamond shaped pearls.

Through the collaboration, consumers now can enjoy special in-flight offerings without even have the need to fly. This offer is initially limited to Don Mueang Airport and surrounding area.

We have seen AirAsia’s in-flight menu brand Santan and T&CO operating a brick-and-mortar store in a shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur offering ASEAN fast food. The dishes include some of AirAsia’s famous in-flight dishes such as Pak Nasser’s Nasi Lemak and Uncle Chin’s Chicken Rice. Airline meals have a reputation of being mediocre in taste.

The concept of selling unique in-flight desserts/beverages has better prospect because it is much more easy to deliver on taste, consistency and exclusivity.

FamilyMart Taiwan’s plant-based fake meat dishes have divided netizens

FamilyMart Taiwan has introduced new plant-based meals to ride consumer interest in plant-based fake meat. The two options are the non-vegetarian plant-based meat tomato spaghetti (怍物肉ç•ȘèŒ„çŸ©ć€§ćˆ©éș”) and the plant-based meat cheeseburger (æ€ç‰©è‚‰è”·ćžć Ą) for those who can eat garlic, chives, onion, asafoetida etc.

However, in a country with strong vegetarian culture, the new plant-based menu has drawn flak from netizens for being highly misleading.

A netizen commented plant-based should be free from dairy and egg and afraid non-Mandarin speakers who are vegetarians would mistakenly consume it. The only English labelling on pack is the word “plant based.” The person suggested removing the English words from the label to avoid confusing consumers.

Another netizen lamented FamilyMart for coming up with a hybrid plant-based food instead of a 100% vegetarian menu. FamilyMart has clarified the plant-based meat menu is not for those who practice the strict vegan diet.

One netizen even highlighted the ingredients for having chicken fat.

However, there is also one netizen who mentioned this is a good choice for people who are not religious. The person added “Taiwan already has a lot of religious vegetarian food. It is great to have some more plant-based choices for people who aren’t Buddhist! Good job Family Mart!”

The saga above shows when plant-based meat enters into a new market, companies have to be mindful of the local practice to avoid stepping on the minefields.

Free dental screening for the underprivileged

The orang asli youths and volunteers from 7-Eleven Malaysia, NGOHub Asia & Klinik Pergigian Kepong

Segambut, 27 February 2020 – 7-Eleven Malaysia recently conducted its latest CSR initiative by arranging for a free dental screening and oral hygiene workshop to underprivileged youths in collaboration with its start-up, NGOHub at SOLS Academy Innovation.

The SOLS Academy of Innovation (SOLS.ai) is a free, 12-month education and boarding program designed to provide a one-of-a-kind educational opportunity to young, especially those of the urban poor, rural and indigenous communities. The one-year program is holistic, focusing on both soft and hard skills, while providing not only practical training but also internship and employment opportunities. Over 8,000 students have graduated since year 2007 and currently the center nurtures 60 students under the guidance of 5 teachers.

The activity started off with an educational insight on dental health and oral health awareness by Dr. Nur Syakirah Bt Abdullah from Klinik Pergigian Kepong followed by dental screening for the students. The students were divided into 2 groups and were briefed on the usage and benefits of oral healthcare products to maintain good oral health. To conclude the event, the students were treated with a scrumptious meal and goodie bags filled with oral healthcare products such as dental kit, mouthwash and dental floss.

Ronan Lee, 7-Eleven Malaysia General Manager of Marketing said, “A substantial number of people are not aware that they have dental problems which may lead to serious illnesses such as mouth cancer and oral infection that are caused by bacteria. It is important to raise awareness on oral hygiene via intervention screenings as well as talks and we hope that the attendees have gleaned useful self-oral care knowledge through this workshop”.

SOLS Academy of Innovation is currently crowdfunding to get a new kitchen for the Academy. Every contribution will be used to improve the students’ experience at the Academy to ensure that they go on to create a bright future for themselves, their families and the wider community. For more information on how to support them, kindly visit their website at https://www.ngohub.asia/campaigns/Help-us.

Explosive mix of coffee with essence of chicken

Sappe, the Thai functional drink company, has launched what is known as Thailand’s first coffee drink with essence of chicken. The combination of essence of chicken, vitamin B12 and black coffee gives the drink a double boost of energy and mental alertness.

Black coffee is a wake-me-up, while the essence of chicken helps the brain to recover from fatigue. The vitamin B12 nourishes the nervous system and brain. The 180ml Sappe Maxtive Essence of Chicken in can format contains vitamin B12 that fulfills 30% of the daily requirement.

Sappe Maxtive Essence of Chicken essentially taps into a well known ingredient, which is essence of chicken that consumers strongly associate with relieving mental fatigue. We have also seen Nestle uses bird’s nest in its yogurt drink for children in Vietnam. Bird’s nest is a highly recognition ingredient in Vietnam. Among the benefits of bird’s nest are supporting children’s growth and development. The examples of essence of chicken and bird’s nest show how brands can leverage on these well known ingredients to maximise the functional benefits of the products.

Sappe Maxtive Essence of Chicken retails at 7-Eleven for THB25 per can.
