Mamee Monster evokes childhood nostalgia with limited edition retro design packs

SUBANG JAYA (15 March 2023) – Mamee Monster, the country’s best known and loved homegrown noodle snack is taking a trip down memory lane with the 1970s version of the brand’s famous blue Mamee Monster making a return this month.

Malaysians can expect to see the iconic blue Mamee Monster back in its familiar 2D retro format on the brand’s bright yellow Mamee Monster Family Pack bags as the products become available in Malaysia and Singapore from March 2023 onwards for limited time only. There will also be collectible stickers in the packs, just like how Mamee Monster used to include surprise items in-pack. This limited-edition packaging with vintage vibes is being rolled out as a tribute to MAMEE-Double Decker’s late founder and executive chairman, Datuk Pang Chin Hin, who passed away in November 2022.

Mamee Monster is a crunchy noodle snack that made its debut in 1974 after Datuk Pang’s eldest son, MAMEE-Double Decker Executive Chairman Tan Sri Pang Tee Chew picked up on something while driving through the estates in Alor Gajah, Malacca – he noticed the rubber tappers were eating uncooked instant noodles straight from the pack. This led the Pang father-son duo to steer their noodle production in a new direction. They decided to pre-season the noodles before selling them, and that was the start of one of the first Malaysia’s favourite snacks. Mamee Monster noodles became a hit not just with the youngsters but also with the adults, thanks to its rich flavour, strong marketing strategy and widespread availability.

“The Mamee Monster noodle snack has been the quintessential Malaysian childhood snack that has been spreading joy for decades, whether enjoyed as a snack at home, in school, at a party or on the go. We have the late Datuk Pang to thank for that and this Mamee Monster Retro Campaign is our way of paying tribute to him and celebrating his life, his creativity and many contributions,” said How Yuan Yi, Chief Marketing Officer of MAMEE-Double Decker.

“Mamee Monster was one of the first of Datuk Pang’s creations and he also created other memorable childhood snacks such as Double Decker prawn crackers, Mister Potato chips and Corntoz corn snacks. We hope that the Mamee Monster Retro campaign will give our consumers a chance to relive their childhood. In fact, we’d like to bring back some of those great memories to share with everyone and we’ll be rewarding consumers for that too,” she added.

The Mamee Monster’s World of Nowstalgia is a word play on ‘nostalgic’ and ‘now’. This campaign aims to leverage that nostalgia, and turn it into something modern, something new, yet retains the charm of the old Mamee Monster packs. The campaign leveraged the rich visual heritage of the brand, transporting it into today’s world.

All the elements, designs, colours, and music that evoke memories of a simpler time, before the rise of the internet and social media, to remind people that even in today’s high-tech, fast-moving, ever-evolving world, there’s always room for the simple pleasures, such as a pack of Mamee Monster noodle snack.

Mamee Monster lovers can look forward to winning cash prizes and exclusive merchandise from now until 29 March 2023. To qualify for the contest, consumers will need to make a minimum purchase of one Mamee Monster Family Pack Retro Limited Edition and follow the Mamee Monster account on Instagram (www.instagram.com/iammameemonster).

Participants will then need to take a creative picture of them enjoying the Mamee Monster Family Pack Retro Limited Edition, include a caption about their favourite Mamee Monster memory and post it on Instagram with the hashtag #MameeMonsterWorldofNowstalgia and tag the @iammameemonster account.

This contest is open to Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above. Mamee Monster will select 80 weekly prize winners for the four contest weeks – each winner will receive RM200 cash and a limited edition Mamee Monster Retro t-shirt and tote bag.

Mamee Monster Family Pack Retro Limited Edition are available in four flavours – Black Pepper, BBQ, Hot & Spicy, and Chicken and are priced at RM3.50 onwards for the Mamee Monster Family Pack. They can be found at all major supermarkets, hypermarkets, mini-markets, petrol marts and convenience stores nationwide, as well as Mamee Jonker House in Malacca. They can also be purchased via MAMEE’s official store on Lazada and Shopee.
