Shield Your Eyes From Harmful Blue Light With BRAND’S® Lutein Essence

SHAH ALAM, 29 January 2019 – For many of us, we may have heard about blue light and its harmful effects in passing, but do we know enough about it? Blue light is part of the spectrum of visible light, making up approximately one-third of all visible light. In nature, the main source of blue light is sunlight, however, today, the number of indoor man-made sources of blue light is on the rise, such as fluorescent and LED lighting, and display screens on mobile devices, computers and flat screen televisions[1]

Overexposure to blue light has been associated with health problems, such as cataracts, and because too much exposure to blue light can damage light sensitive cells in the retina, it can also cause changes that resemble macular degeneration, which can lead to blindness. In addition, the high energy blue light waves require more effort by the eye to focus, thus contributing to digital eye strain. Exposure to too much blue light at night through screens and indoor lighting may also lead to poor sleep quality, difficulty falling asleep and daytime fatigue.

Today, most of us would not be able to live without our devices that emit blue light, so there is a need to better shield our eyes to keep them healthy. To help you do this, BRAND’S® Suntory (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd is introducing its latest addition to the BRAND’S® family – BRAND’S® Lutein Essence, the only health tonic in the market that offers the Diamond formula to protect our eyes from overexposure to blue light. An ideal health supplement to help you overcome the digital eye strain caused by blue light, BRAND’S® Lutein Essence – made from selected patented ingredients, is the only scientifically formulated essence for eye care in the market.

BRAND’S® Lutein Essence contains a 10mg:2mg ratio of lutein and zeaxanthin, the two types of carotenoids which form the yellow to red pigments found widely in vegetables and other plants. In nature, lutein and zeaxanthin are able to absorb excess light energy to prevent damage to plants from too much sunlight, especially from blue light. Combining blackcurrant extract with Vitamin E to provide antioxidants, BRAND’S® Lutein Essence enhances the comfort level of the eye. Offered in a liquid formulation to enable easy consumption, your body can absorb its nutrients more easily. Not to mention, its delicious taste will tempt you to drink it regularly. With youths becoming glued to their screens from a young age, they can also benefit from taking BRAND’S® Lutein Essence, which is suitable for even children aged 10 years and above. Manufactured in Taiwan, BRAND’S® Lutein Essence is laboratory-certified free from porcine DNA and ethanol.

Kuang Ming Ming, General Manager of BRAND’S® Suntory (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd shared, “The new BRAND’S® Lutein Essence combines all the essential ingredients to provide a power pack of eye-boosting nutrients that can help Malaysians of all ages protect their eyes from the blue light they encounter daily. In this day and age, we are exposed to blue light all the time, emitted from the screens we look at – during working hours and also during our leisure time. This latest offering in the BRAND’S® range is meant for Malaysians who are constantly on their computers or smartphones. With its great nutritional benefits, BRAND’S®Lutein Essence will enable them to take optimum care of their eyes.”

BRAND’S® Lutein Essence is available at a retail price of RM41 for a pack of six 60ml bottles at key pharmacy chains and hypermarkets. New Year, New Look for Grace Home Klang

The residents of Grace Home Klang and volunteers from 7-Eleven Malaysia & NGOHub Asia

Klang, 24 January 2019 – Some say, to ring in the new year with a bang, a new hairdo (bangs or no bangs) is essential. Especially when Chinese New Year happens to be just around the corner. With this in mind, 7-Eleven Malaysia recently travelled to Klang to kick start the new year together with the ladies of Grace Home Klang, where they were pampered with brand new haircuts and other goodies.

Grace Home Klang was founded by Dr. Hendy K.Pillai through an opportunity to start the home with 5 elderly destitute women from China who needed a shelter for themselves. Since then, the home has taken in over 1,500 underprivileged women, some of whom are widowed or suffered from domestic violence referred directly by the Welfare Department. Currently, the home shelters 27 women, several whom are disabled.

With the help of volunteers from NGOhub, the residents were gathered around as hairdressers gave each of them their haircuts. The volunteers took the opportunity to get to know the ladies who were waiting their turn before cleaning up after the haircut session. To add to the celebration, 7-Eleven Malaysia brought goodie bags to be handed out alongside provisions such as rice, oil and many more. The joyful folks at Grace Home Klang entertained the volunteers with performances of oldies from the 60s before bidding farewell.

In a conversation, Amy, the home care assistant shared, “The ladies always welcome much-needed company and encouragement from the community as it makes them feel appreciated and happy in spite of the struggles they have faced. The sponsorship of provisions and manpower would also be of great help to lift some weight off their shoulders.

“7-Eleven Malaysia always strive to reach out to the underprivileged and less fortunate community. We hope that our initiative inspire the public to volunteer at nursing homes or any other shelters for the less fortunate, especially during the festive period when one would especially be reminded of the warmth and joy of family. This was a great way to start off the new year, especially for wonderful ladies of Grace Home Klang, just in time for the fast approaching Chinese New Year,” said Ronan Lee, 7-Eleven Malaysia’s General Manager of Marketing.

Surviving on minimum wage – Picodi

How much money is left after meeting the basic nutritional needs?

At the beginning of every year, minimum wages are updated in many countries. However, the concept of a minimum wage is not ubiquitous: we won’t find the lowest legal remuneration in Nordic countries, Italy, Switzerland or Singapore. Malaysia is among the countries that ratified the United Nations Minimum Wage Convention, so this concept is well-known and practised there.

Nevertheless, the question whether a minimum wage is high enough to allow us to meet the basic nutritional needs still remains. Picodi.com Analysis Team decided to take a closer look at prices of the 8 universal food groups in 52 countries and confront them with the current minimum wage in respective countries. It turns out that in some countries the minimum wage is barely high enough to purchase a modest nutritious food basket. How does Malaysia look in comparison to other countries?

Prices of basic food products

For the purpose of this report, we created an example of a shopping basket filled with items from the 8 universal food groups: bread, milk, rice, eggs, cheese, meat, fruits and vegetables. Even though this list is short and frugal, these products meet the nutritional needs of an adult and the prices are constantly monitored around the world.

In Malaysia, for a basket filled with basic items from the list above, you will have to pay around RM 361.29.

Contents of the shopping basket and the average prices:

  • Milk (10l) — RM 68.00
  • Bread (10 loaves, 500g each) — RM 32.20
  • Rice (2.5kg) — RM 5.93
  • Eggs (20) — RM 8.65
  • Cheese (1kg) — RM 49.67
  • Poultry and beef (6kg) — RM 117.90
  • Fruits (6kg) — RM 49.52
  • Vegetables (8kg) — RM 29.42
Can one survive on minimum wage in Malaysia?

The ratio of food prices to minimum wage

Since 1 January 2019, the minimum wage in Malaysia has been RM 1,100 (net: RM 971.65). Considering the average prices of food in Malaysia, expenditure on basic food products makes 37.2% of the minimum wage, which places Malaysia 39th on the list of 52 countries.

According to our ranking, Australia, Ireland and the United Kingdom are countries where the minimum wages are the most favourable. Taking into account local prices, employees with the lowest possible remuneration will spend 7% of their salary for the very same basket as people from other parts of the world.

Among countries that placed lower than Malaysia were China (41st place), Vietnam (47th), Thailand ((49th) and India (50th place).

The Philippines and Nigeria are in the worst situation, though. The minimum wage in Nigeria is so low that it doesn’t cover the costs of even the most basic shopping basket.

Ranking of countries based on minimum wages and prices of basic food products

Methodology

This report uses the latest information about minimum wages rates published on official government websites from 52 countries in Europe, Asia, North and South Americas, Africa and Australia. There are a few countries which update their rates on a different date than 1 January. In Greece, the minimum wage hasn’t changed since 2013. The food basket used for this report represents the average prices compiled by thousands of numbeo.com users. For currency conversion, we used the average exchange rate for December 2018.
